KONNAKOL - because rhythm is universal
One thing that I learned from Trilok Gurtu and the whole Konnakol tradition is that there is soo much more to discover within a simple bar of 4/4 than most musicians can even imagine. Here is a simple example of how two bars of 4/4 can be turned in to amazing melodic rhythms. Most musicians has some knowledge about the basic chord progressions, in our culture, like: 4-5-1 or 2-5-1. But here is an introduction to the indian rhythmic progression in 3 parts TIHAI - resolving on beat one. Can you imagine what happens if you combine these two things?
